RS-232 Device Interfaces

The oil/gas devices depending on RS-232 (and RS-485) for communication. We created a Windows desktop UI to interface with these devices. With the application, the user can configure the devices with confidence. The real-time graphical chart is also available for monitoring. For off-line analysis, the user can log the data and export it to Excel for further examination of measuring results.

Overview

In oil/gas industry, RS-232 (and RS-485 multi-drop) - a very old communication standard is still relevant. Instead of using "Universal Serial Bus (USB)" or other contemporary data communication standards, RS-232 remains popular.

Many of the oil/gas devices such as “Ultrasonic Flowmeter” and “Water in Oil Monitor” utilize simple multi-row LED/LCD display with an onboard simple keypad to perform device configuration. These devices usually equip with RS-232 connections for transferring logged data to the desktop computer. This feature is critical especially for devices with small on-board memory.

Technology

A Windows desktop application, implemented with RS-232 communication protocol, is created to offer the following features:

  • To configure the device using a beautiful UI.
  • To capture logged data and export it to Excel file.
  • To display logged data graphically

Benefits

  • With a more sophisticated desktop UI, the user can configure the device without making mistakes, as all data are validated before transmitted to the device using the RS-232 interface.
  • You will not lose any logged data due to limited onboard memory. Furthermore, data are in a popular Excel format that you can easily manipulate and charting.
  • When you are on the field, you can use the application to display real-time charts.
